Highland Tank produces a wide variety of custom ASME pressure vessels for many applications including municipal, commercial, and industrial applications. Horizontal ASME vessels can be installed aboveground with saddle mounts, while vertical ASME vessels have legs or ring bases. When installed underground, ASME pressure vessels usually require advanced external corrosion protection systems or waterstops for breakthrough basement or vaulted installation. These vessels can be equipped with many accessories including OSHA-compliant ladders, stairs, walkways, and catwalks as well as gauging, pumping, and control systems.

Highland Tank is certified to manufacture unfired pressure vessels built to the following standards:

thermal energy storage tanks

Thermal Energy Storage systems are engineered process tanks or vessels that add heat or remove heat from a storage medium such as water. These tanks are a key element in delaying the effects of cooling failure due to power loss or catastrophic failure. TES provides a low cost from of storage that can be either a pressurized ASME vessel or atmospheric UL-142 storage tank. The most common chilled water TES tank is a cylindrical, vertical pressurized water storage vessel. Environmental benefits include reduction of source energy use, decreased refrigerant charge, and improved efficiency of the energy supply. Because Highland Tank’s TES tanks are made of steel, non-corrosive PVC diffusers, and minimal, if any VOC coatings, life cycle costs are at a minimum.

buffer tanks

ASME buffer tanks help improve temperature control, and provide a more consistent operation for non-potable closed systems.  Chilled water buffer tanks are designed for chilled water systems with insufficient water volume capacity related to the chiller capacity. A hot water buffer tank are designed for systems that incorporate boilers. Buffer tanks help minimize cycling while providing buffer to the system’s volume.

heated & chilled water tank

Hot water tanks are used in commercial buildings, institutional facilities, and assorted industries that require a constant supply of hot water. Water is usually heated and stored in this ASME vessel during periods of low demand, providing an addequate supply of hot water during periods of maximum demand.

Chilled water tanks are used with large HVAC installations to allow for fewer cycles of the compressor and better temperature control. Chilled water is used to cool and dehumidify air in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. A properly sized chilled water tank adds the necessary volume to “buffer” the cooling system and allows it to operate at peak efficiency. When applied to contemporary chilled thermal storage technology, CWT allow the user to time shift the electrical load of the system from the peak day periods to off peak night time periods.

air receivers

Air receiver tanks are used in compressed air systems to store compressed air and permit pressure to be equalized in the system. These vessels are sized to supplement the air compressor operation – typically one gallon of storage for each Actual Cubic Feet per Minute (ACFM) for the rated compressor output.

boiler blowdown

Boiler blowdown is water taken from a boiler at points where concentrations of impurities in the water are high. Highland Tank’s boiler blowdown tanks are used to control the blowdown to minimize dissolved solids and contaminants, reduce scaling in the boiler, and prevent boiler failure. They also enable high-pressure water to safely flash to steam.

knockout drum

A knockout drum is a vapor/liquid separator used to separate a vapor and liquid mixture. These tanks are widely used at natural gas processing plants, oil refineries, gas pipelines, compressor systems, power plants, and other industrial sites.

A flare knockout drum may be necessary during gas drilling, production, or processing to remove any oil and water from relieved gases.  Natural gas found in oil fields often cannot be transported and needs to be burnt. A flare stack protects the pressure vessel and piping from over-pressuring. Flare knockout drums can also be used to gasify heavy fuel oils to produce cleaner energy.

surge tanks

A surge tank is installed on large pipelines to relieve excess pressure caused by water hammer and to neutralize sudden changes of pressure in the flow by filling when pressure increases and emptying when pressure drops. These are typically vertical tanks connected to a pipeline.

slug catcher

A slug catcher is a unit that collects large quantities of gas or liquid that exists in the pipeline. These slugs can overload the gas/liquid handling capacity of the plant especially during times where large volumes of liquid that collect in the pipeline are pushed through in a short time. Slug catchers help protect equipment and pipelines downstream from damaging liquids.
